Privacy Policy

Throwback AI ("we", "us", "our") operates the Throwback AI: 80s Photo mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By installing or using the App you agree to this Policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information you provide

• Photos you upload — the image you pick from your device is sent to our AI image provider (OpenAI) to generate your retro result. It is processed transiently to create the output and is not retained on our servers after processing.
• Prompts — the template/style text used to transform your photo.
• Purchase records — subscription state managed by Google Play Billing. We never see your card or bank details.
• Support communications — any message you send us at support@throwbackai.app.

1.2 Information collected automatically

• Device & app data — device model, OS version, app version, language, and an install ID (via Firebase Installations).
• Usage data — screens viewed, features used, and ads shown/clicked.
• Advertising identifier — Android Advertising ID, used by AdMob to select and frequency-cap ads where you have consented.

1.3 Permissions we request

The App requests only the following Android permissions, each used solely for the feature described — we never collect data through these in the background.

• Internet (android.permission.INTERNET) & Network state (android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) — required to generate images, sync subscriptions, load remote configuration, and show ads.
• Advertising ID (com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID) — required by AdMob for ad selection and frequency capping. You can reset or limit this identifier from your device's Google Settings > Ads.

Selecting a photo uses the Android system photo picker, which does not require a storage permission — the App only receives the single image you pick.

2. How We Use Information

• To generate your AI image from the photo and style you choose.
• To process subscription purchases and confirm entitlement.
• To display ads (including rewarded ads that unlock generations) and measure their performance.
• To detect, prevent, and respond to abuse, fraud, and security incidents.
• To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms & Conditions.

3. Third-Party Services We Use

The following processors receive data when you use the App. Each operates under its own privacy policy linked below.

• OpenAI (image generation / edits used to create your result) — openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
• Google Firebase (Realtime Database, Installations) — firebase.google.com/support/privacy
• Google AdMob (advertising) — policies.google.com/technologies/ads
• Google Play Billing (subscriptions) — policies.google.com/privacy

Your photo and prompt are transmitted to OpenAI for processing. Per OpenAI's API policy, content sent via the API is not used to train their models by default. Do not upload images or text you would not want sent to a third-party service provider.

4. AI Content and Limitations

Results are generated by AI image models and may be inaccurate, stylised, or imperfect despite our efforts. The App is for entertainment and creative use only.

5. Advertising and Rewarded Ads

The free tier is funded by ads served by AdMob. You may see banner, interstitial, and rewarded ads. Rewarded ads are optional and unlock generations in exchange for watching. Where required by law, you will be presented with a Google-provided consent form to choose between personalised and non-personalised ads. You can change this later from your device's Google Settings > Ads section.

6. Data Retention

• Uploaded photos — processed transiently to create your result and not retained on our servers afterward. Your generated images are saved only on your device ("My Creations"), which you can clear anytime in the App.
• Subscription records — retained as long as required by tax and accounting law.
• Diagnostic logs — retained for up to 14 months.

7. Your Rights

Depending on where you live (e.g. EEA, UK, India under the DPDP Act 2023, California under the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, to object to processing, and to withdraw consent. To exercise any of these rights, email support@throwbackai.app. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Security

We use industry-standard measures including TLS for data in transit and Google Play Billing for payment processing. No system is perfectly secure; contact us if you have a concern.

9. International Transfers

Our service providers operate globally and may process data outside your country of residence, including the United States, protected by standard contractual clauses and the providers' privacy commitments.

10. Children

The App is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the current version; material changes will be surfaced in-app.
